Farm Bureau T Shirt Separations
4 color Process vs. Simulated Process Seps for Screen Printing
This screen printing separation was completed for a local screen printer. Originally the printer had separated the design as a 4 color process (CMYK). Unfortunately, the print was looking either to red on the man’s face or much to purple on the sign. The printer asked us to produce this design as a simulated process separation.
Advantages of Simulated
1) Some of the advantages of producing this design as a simulated process are that colors can be exact. There are some mixing of colors to achieve the flesh tones of the fella’s face but most colors are exact.
2) Another advantage of simulated process is the ability to print near solid blocks of color. This allows the printer to eliminate a lot of halftones that would be unavoidable with 4 color process. Which in turn makes for a cleaner looking print.
Disadvantages of Simulated
1) More colors! This separation increased in colors from 4 to now 5. Not a bad trade off on a print such as this.
2) More colors = more cost.
3) The seps need to be correctly produced and account for dot gain and loss.
Advantages of 4 color Process
Process seps for screen printing allow the printer to achieve almost unlimited colors.
Disadvantages of Simulated Process
1) Limitation to printing on white garments. Look to simulated process for printing on black t-shirts.
2) The screen printer needs to be well versed in the process. ie. The seps need to be correctly produced and account for dot gain and loss. Not every printer can or should print process designs.
In the end, the choice between simulated and process seps will depend on both the ability of the screen printer, the art, and the skill of the separation artist.

5K road race event t- shirt separation for screen printing
This t-shirt separation was completed for a screen printer to print for the Light the Way 5K event. The design features a excellent picture of a lighthouse with great details. The details that make this separation stand out are windows and a rusted walkway. The design was separated as a simulated process screen print.
